Light

Bonsai trees need a lot of light. It is best to place them in the sun or a place in your home that gets a good amount of direct sunlight such as a window sill. Artificial lights are another way you can make sure your Bonsai tree is getting it’s fill of light.

Humidity

Bonsai trees need to have constant humidity. If you live in a humid climate, you’re already off to a good start. But for those of us who don’t, you must provide the humidity for the tree. You can do this by putting the tree in a humidity tray that is filled with a little bit of water or misting your Bonsai a few times a day. Another good idea is to circulate the air in your house by opening a window. You want to keep the humidity for your tree as high as possible. This will keep your Bonsai tree from dying.

Watering

You should water your Bonsai tree when the soil is dry. Do not water the tree when the soil is still wet because you may end up drowning it. Through research, we found that you should not water your Bonsai tree on a routine. Instead, only water when needed. Use a watering pot or hose attachment that disperse the water in a delicate manner so as not to ruin the soil.

Trimming/Pruning

Trimming or pruning your Bonsai tree is necessary for the trees health. You can prune your tree for maintenance from March to September. When you trim your Bonsai tree, trim it back to the closest safe point on the branch. Never trim off all the new growth or you will damage your tree’s health. Leave a little bit of the new growth on the tree to keep it healthy and growing. Each bonsai tree is different, some need periodic trimming and pruning. It is important to research the type of Bonsai tree you have so that you know how often your tree needs to be trimmed.

Repotting

When it comes to how often you should repot your tree, it all depends on what type of Bonsai tree you have and how big it’s pot is. Repotting should happen during the early spring while it is still inactive in its growing. How do you know when to repot? Repot your tree when the roots fill up the inside of the pot. Use a root rake to carefully take your tree out of its pot. Remove all of the soil as well. Looking at the bottom of your tree, remove any roots that have gotten too long. You should remove about 1/4 of the trees root mass. Your Bonsai tree can be put back into the same pot or a new one if you’d like. Fill up the pot with soil that drains quickly but still holds enough moisture.

Fertilize

Regularly fertilize your Bonsai tree during its growing period, early Spring to the middle of Autumn. Make sure you do not fertilize a recently repotted tree for about a month. Before fertilizing a Bonsai, make sure the soil is wet. That way the fertilizer will be absorbed into the soil instead of just sitting on top of it. It is important to note that you shouldn’t fertilize a sick tree. Fertilizer is not medicine so it won’t help your become healthy again. There are many different fertilizers out on the market. The main thing you should be looking for is a balanced fertilizer that contains, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Do research on the best fertilizers out there for your tree.
